Ready for a pie that whips up fast and tastes fantastic? With only a handful of ingredients making this Brazilian Guava and Salted Caramel Pie is a breeze even for an inexperienced baker.
Better yet, there's hardly any baking involved!
This recipe had me hooked at “salted caramel.”
I love the combination of sweet and salty, and you could sell me on any dessert with “salted caramel” in the title. I’m unapologetically weak for it. Combine it with tropical fruit in a pie, and I’ll take ten.
Or I’ll make as many as I want! This Brazilian pie with guava and salted caramel is amazing. Each layer of the cake has a distinct flavor that all come together in your mouth to create a beautiful melody of decadence.
Sounds enticing, right?
This is one of those recipes I love to bring to gatherings because it’s not as common what many people think to bring. The other guests are also so intrigued when I tell them what it is too!
The caramel can be found in the Latin section of your grocery store or near the baking ingredients. Try not to eat it straight out of the can. Maybe that warning isn’t completely necessary, and only I have that much of an addiction to the stuff.
Either way, don’t say I didn’t warn you!
If you prefer to make it from scratch, here are two recipes that you might like. One is for Dulce de Leche and another for salted caramel.
What is the difference between caramel and Dulce de Leche?
- Caramel is made with heavy whipping cream, sugar, and butter.
- Dulce de leche is commonly made with condensed milk.
They can be used as substitutes for one another because they have similar tastes, colors, and textures, and will do the same thing for whatever dish you are using them in.
For this recipe, you’ll need your oven for the crust, and your stove top for your guava paste, but the pie actually needs to be refrigerated and will be served cold. This creates a perfect summer dessert, in combination with the bright taste of the guava.
I love my warm apple pie a la mode during those winter holidays, but this is perfect while sitting outside to wrap up a barbecue.
Guava
Guava is something I’ve been trying to introduce to my friends. If you’re a frequent visitor to my blog you know that I have no limits when trying the widest variety of international cuisines.
I love all types of exotic and unique flavors. Guava has its origins in Mexico, Central America, and northern South America.
Many countries have very distinct spices that they use with guavas, methods of preparing the fruit, and dishes that use guava as the main ingredient. Some countries will add savory spices to the fruit, and it is often used to make jams, preserves, and candies.
Guava is also low in calories and has 4 times the Vitamin C as an orange. Among numerous health benefits, guavas can prevent deterioration of eyesight due to high amounts of Vitamin A, and improve brain health through high levels of Vitamin B3 and B6.
As always, fruits and vegetables are best eaten plain and in their raw form, allowing you to intake the most amount of vitamins and minerals; however, we’re going to have a little more fun with this fruit.
Other Ways to Use Guava
I have used guava paste in another recipe of mine, where I made guava mini cheesecakes with a drizzle of it on top. Heavenly is undoubtedly the word for that. And this pie is just as amazing. Well, almost. Cheesecake will always be my one true love – apologies to my husband!
How to make it:
Crust
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.
- Add Maria cookies, butter, and brown sugar to a food processor. Process for about 2 minutes, until it is all incorporated. Press mixture into a 9-inch pie dish. Bake for about 7 to 10 minutes, until the surface is golden brown. Let cool.
Filing
- Scrape the dulce de leche into the pie crust. Evenly sprinkle sea salt over the caramel. Set aside.
- In a small saucepan, add guava paste and water. Use medium heat to melt the guava paste. Spread the guava sauce over the dulce the Leche.
Topping
- In a bowl, mix the sour cream and sugar together. Spread the cream on top of the pie and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving. Top with whipped cream if desired.

Plus, where in the world do I find guavas this time of year.Maybe the mexican store? Hmm, anyways my moiuth is seriously watering! Delia @ http://www.delia-in-a-nutshell.com

Awe, thanks for the giggle! Yes, Mexican stores would have it as well as Amazon, where I got mine (link in the post). I hear you and your sugar concerns. I try to substitute with better options every time I can. Not sure how much sugar is in the cookies, paste, and caramel, but the recipe doesn't require any if that helps. LOL
