Enjoy the famous, mouthwatering Mackinac fudge from your own kitchen. Easy to make this delicious fudge is a perfect treat and makes a great holiday gift too.
I woke up realizing I only have one week left before returning home from...home. No, I'm not running in circles. In case you missed it, I'm visiting Bosnia. Bosnia is a beautiful country I was born and raised in, the birth country of my daughter too. Bittersweet.
My next trip will be to Germany, my other home. How can I have so many homes? Once you create a personal infrastructure in a new place, you feel at home.
You're at home when you finally have the geography of the soul, as Aleksandar Hamon described in his novel The Book Of My Lives. May I remind you, that was the book we talked about in the show Dinner and a Book. I covered the recipes here.
Having more than one home, regardless of the hardships along the way, is sweet. As sweet as this gourmet Mackinac chocolate butterscotch fudge.
Mackinac Chocolate Butterscotch Fudge
Mackinac Island fudge is famous for its unworldly flavor. There are many varieties, but my personal favorite is chocolate butterscotch. A tradition since the late 19th century, fudge is the island’s most popular souvenir.
I had this fudge recipe booklet ever since we visited Mackinac Island the first time, some years ago. I never made any fudge until now, although I had every intention to do just that when I bought it.
Out of a dozen recipes, I picked this chocolate butterscotch fudge to be my first ever fudge to make. Granted, I do not have a marble slab to work my fudge on with a paddle, like we watched them do it on the island, but it turned out pretty amazing!
Ingredients:
- Sugar
- Sweetened Condensed Milk
- Water
- Semi-Sweet Chocolate
- Butterscotch chips
- Butter or Margarine
- Vanilla
- Walnuts
Directions:
- In a medium-size heavy saucepan combine the sugar, condensed milk, water, chocolate, and butterscotch pieces. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, to a soft ball stage (234 degrees F).
- Remove from heat. Combine butter and vanilla in a mixing bowl. Pour hot mixture into a bowl. Beat with an electric mixer (paddle attachment) at high speed until the mixture starts to thicken. Stir in walnuts.
- Spread into a greased 9-inch square baking pan. Cool and cut into 1 ½ inch squares.

I hope you are having a lovely trip home and back to your other home too. Only other people that have lived abroad in more than one country can really understand what you mean by this. I have 3 homes now.. in 3 different countries, not in the sense of having a real home with a kitchen but the feeling of home in any 3 that I am in. Michigan and enjoying a little bit of good old fashion mackinaw island fudge, Yokohama, Japan and of course Hong Kong. Do you know that feeling you get when you enter into the airport, a sense of anticipation to see your old home.. will have to give your fudge a try and I bet it will remind me of Michigan. Safe travels to you.

Bobbi, you nailed it! The anticipation, the sense of being home, and new things I learn about myself every time I visit. Thank you so much for stopping in even when I'm not there. It means so much to me!!! Hugs
