Oven-roasted bang bang shrimp is a healthier version of the popular restaurant-style appetizer that you can easily make at home. This dish of crispy breaded shrimp coated in the spicy sauce is done in minutes and it's the ultimate quick game-day appetizer or a snack.
“Bang Bang Shrimp” – what a name! And what a dish! If you’ve ever been to Bonefish Grill and haven’t ordered their BANG BANG SHRIMP, you are making an awful mistake. Unless, you know, you’re allergic to shrimp, then I’ll let this one slide.
Even if you claim to not like shrimp because of its texture or whatnot (like me), this recipe will make you fall in love. It's the only shrimp I'll eat.
Why this recipe works:
This spicy little dish is perfect as an appetizer, to top some pasta or rice, and would be amazing for spicing up a salad. Literally. Oh, and do not even get me started on bang bang shrimp tacos.
As you know, I am sharp as a knife and quick to find shortcuts in my recipes. If there’s a quicker and easier way for me to get a beautiful, delicious meal on the table while preserving its quality, I’ll do it with no hesitation.
Which is why I bought shrimp that was frozen, breaded, and tails removed. I don’t mind paying a little extra for someone to do that dirty work for me. I have no shame when it comes to that.
Ingredients:
- Frozen, breaded, tails removed shrimp - You can use fresh, shelled, and deveined then coat in dry cornstarch and deep fry.
For the bang bang sauce:
- Mayonnaise - You can substitute with sour cream, Greek yogurt, or mashed avocado.
- Chili garlic sauce - Sriracha is a good substitute
- Granulated sugar - Optional
- Rice vinegar - If you can't find it at your grocery store, substitute with apple cider vinegar
- Iceberg lettuce - Romaine lettuce works well too
- Green onion (scallion) - for garnish
How do I make it?
While some bang bang shrimp recipes involve sautéing your shrimp, grilling them, or frying, I baked them in the oven.
- Bake the shrimp according to the package directions.
- Meanwhile, mix the mayo, chili sauce, sugar, and vinegar in a large bowl. Add hot baked shrimp and toss to coat.
- Serve over lettuce and sprinkled with chopped green onion.
On occasion, I try and use a slightly healthier cooking method. I know you can probably rebuttal and say something like, “but what about the cake for breakfast?” or “the x amount of desserts on your blog?”
You’re right; I have a naughty sweet tooth. But, I decided to bake these shrimp instead of frying them. That way they're not drenched in oil and have that beautiful, textured outside that is perfect for being hugged by the Thai bang bang sauce.
While I don’t like the texture of shrimp all that much, this dish is just too delicious to be distracted by something so minuscule. My husband loves shrimp and I often make it for him. Aren't I a nice wife? 😉
Oh, and I must say, he said he likes these bang-bang better than the ones from Bonefish Grill. HA. Jas: 1. Bonefish: 0.
Recipe Notes:
- You can deep-fry the shrimp instead of baking in the oven. If you choose to do so, drain on paper towels before coating with the sauce.
- Also, you can use fresh shrimp that is shelled and deveined, pat dry, and coat in cornstarch before deep-frying them.
How do I serve this shrimp dish?
Serve as-is for an appetizer or a snack. For lunch or supper option, either double the recipe or serve with a side of white rice, such as Basmati or Jasmine.

Oven-Baked Bang Bang Shrimp - Bonefish Grill Copycat Recipe
EQUIPMENT

- Mixing bowl
Ingredients
- 1 pound frozen, breaded, tails removed shrimp (or fresh, shelled and deveined that you can coat in dry cornstarch and deep fry)
- ½ cup mayonnaise
- 4 teaspoons chili garlic sauce
- 1 teaspoon granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon rice vinegar
- 1 small head iceberg lettuce, chopped
- 1 green onion, scallion, sliced white and green parts
Instructions
- Bake the shrimp according to the package directions.
- Meanwhile, mix the mayo, chili sauce, sugar, and vinegar in a large bowl. Add hot baked shrimp and toss to coat.
- Serve immediately over lettuce and sprinkled with chopped green onion.

Jas, before the wife and I moved to Sweden we often had dinner at the bar of our local Bonefish. We always just had three appetizers for our meal and Bang Bang shrimp was always one of them. I’m so glad to get the copycat for the sauce. Slick idea to use prebreaded and to bake. I’ll have to see if we can get those here.
