Cool off your hot summer nights with this delicious, Italian-style rum and raisins soft-serve gelato with rum sauce!
Summer always feels like it's over before it even starts, or like someone else noted: "summer is like the ultimate one-night stand. Hot as hell, totally thrilling, and gone before you know it." ๐
Update Notes: This recipe was originally published in September 2014. It was updated in July of 2020 with new photos and recipe tips.
Making your gelato has many advantages: you know what's inside, you always have your favorite variety ready, and you can vary it as you wish.
Why this rum and raisins gelato works:
What would spring and summer be without delicious gelato? You can usually visit your favorite shop to enjoy one of these - but as is well known, everything will be a little different in 2020 than ever before.
If you rarely go to the front door at the moment, you don't have to do without the frozen treat. Just make yours at home - this is very easy without an ice cream maker.
As a big vanilla ice cream fan, making it without an ice cream maker is a magical affair, because you only need three ingredients. The best thing is: the basic ingredients are low in histamine!
In addition to being incredibly tasty, creamy, and ready in no time, you can add your favorite ingredients and make it your own. Here, we're recreating one of the best gelatos we tasted in Venice, Italy.
Ingredients in this gelato with rum and raisins:
For the gelato:
Sweetened condensed milk, heavy cream, and vanilla extract are the basic ingredients. Keep the milk and cream refrigerated. They both need to be chilled!
For the rum sauce (optional):
No-churn gelato has many advantages:
You can make it in just 10 minutes, and then it only needs 5-6 hours in the freezer. So it can also be done as a dessert if guests have spontaneously announced themselves for the evening.
However, if your neck hairs rise when you hear sweetened condensed milk, you do not need to read further, because sweetened condensed milk is one of the three ingredients.
But trust me - the creamy gelato is simply awesome!
Children love ice cream. And parents love it when they can make their children happy. With the homemade frozen treat, children can create their favorite flavors and discover new cold treats again and again.
You can also easily make popsicles yourself with molds: fill in the fruit juice, freeze, done.
Soft-serve gelato has many possibilities:
Incidentally, you can vary the basic gelato to your heart's content. Whether chocolate chili, strawberry mint, or classics - try it out! For example, add crushed Oreos, chopped chocolate, pureed fruit, pieces of your favorite candy, nuts, Nutella, peanut butter, etc.
Classic spices in ice cream production are (of course) vanilla, coffee, cocoa, or cinnamon. If you are keen to experiment, you can also dare to try other flavors. How about lavender or anise, for example? There are no limits to your creativity!
By the way, my creamy gelato tastes delicious with my Swedish apple oatmeal pie or plum ricotta tart when they come fresh from the oven and are still a little lukewarm.

Do you want to prepare the ice cream of your dreams? We'll tell you what makes your ice cream so unique:
Ice cream is nothing more than a frozen liquid, mostly cream and milk, sometimes boiled with sugar (but not in this rum and raisin gelato recipe).
Mascarpone, yogurt, or sour cream are also delicious alternatives. Most ice creams are made with egg yolk, which ensures good binding of the liquid ingredients. Alternatively, you can use a little gelatin to bind or leave it out altogether.
So that it does not freeze into a hard block like an ice cube, it is recommended to stir homemade ice cream regularly. This will crush the ice crystals and make the ice creamy. However, it is not mandatory for this recipe because alcohol does not freeze.
If you're vegan and want to prepare your gelato entirely without animal products, you can use plant-based alternatives such as condensed coconut milk, coconut cream, almond, or soy milk. A little locust bean gum or coconut flour will ensure the binding, if necessary.

How to serve this Italian-style gelato?
I would just eat it straight out of the dish drizzled all over with the rum sauce, but you can do either of these:
- Using an ice cream or cookie scoop, serve in small bowls. ๐จ
- Serve in sugar cups or cones. ๐ฆ
- Fill waffle bowls and top with whipped cream. ๐ง
Recipe Notes:
- It is best to use condensed milk that is cold. You can leave it in your fridge for a few hours or overnight.
- If your raisins are very dry, soak them in rum for at least a few hours. This is not necessary if you use baking raisins.
- For the whipped cream, make sure your bowl and beater(s) are free of oil. Wipe it down with a paper towel lightly damp with vinegar. It also helps if you pre-cool it in the refrigerator.
- Because alcohol does not freeze, this rum and raisins gelato is soft serve and super creamy.
- This gelato is NOT suitable for kids as it contains alcohol!

Hi for how hours do you put the ice cream in the freezer
Jas says
At least 6 hours, but best overnight.

Hello! According to the recipe's ingredients, the rum sauce ingredients are 2 teaspoons of butter, 1/4 cup of brown sugar (looks like light brown sugar in the picture), and 1/4 cup of rum (I imagined is spiced rum and not dark rum). However, the measurements contradict the ingredient list. The instructions say 2 tablespoons of butter and 1/2 cup of rum.
Questions:
It is 2 teaspoons or 2 tablespoons of butter?
It is 1/4 cup of spiced rum or 1/2 cup?
Please advice. Thank you1
Jas says
Oops! Thank you for catching that error, Mercy! It is light brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of butter, and 1/4 cup of spiced dark rum (like Captain Morgan). The recipe box is edited.
Andrea says
I hate raisins. Would this be good without them?
allthatsjas says
Yes, definitely...but you have to like rum ๐ (if you still want texture, try adding chopped dates)
