If you have ever been told not to play with your food then you'll love these spicy fillo samosa edible firecrackers because what's more fun than playing with your food?
Besides, now that you're an adult you can do with your food whatever you darn please.

I don't know about your childhood, but non-food items you could eat were really popular when I was little. Edible paper, chocolate cigars...pop rocks, anyone?
They say growing old is mandatory but growing up is optional. I still love playing with food and making fun things to eat, like those Christmas candles and chocolate salami.
For these firecrackers, I played with the basic Indian samosa recipe and used fillo pastry to simplify the process.
Instead of folding the dough into traditional triangles, I rolled the pastry and pinched the ends, shaping them like firecrackers because that's what I think of when I eat spicy food. Baking, instead of frying, makes them a bit healthier too.
These fiery little appetizers are absolutely perfect for holiday celebrations like the New Year's or Fourth of July but also for any gathering and parties.
Edible firecrackers are much safer too - the only explosion will be one of the flavors in your mouth. 😉 They're the first to disappear at potlucks and parties. Such a crowd pleaser! Serve them with a side of homemade Indian mango chutney. Delicious!
Do you play with your food too?
🛒Ingredients and Notes
- fillo pastry
- olive oil
- potatoes
- frozen peas
- onion
- crushed red pepper flakes
- ground ginger
- turmeric
- minced
- garam masala or curry powder
- chili powder
- fresh cilantro
- lemon
- Salt and freshly ground pepper
🔪Step by Step Instructions
- Peel, chop and boil potatoes in salted water for about 20 minutes or until cooked through. Drain and set aside.
- In a cast-iron skillet or non-stick pan, heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until translucent, 2-3 minutes. Stir in crushed red pepper flakes, ginger, turmeric, garlic, garam masala, red chili powder, and cilantro. Add lemon juice, peas, and potatoes. Fry for 5 minutes. Set aside and allow it to cool.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Unroll the fillo pastry and remove six sheets. Place one sheet of pastry on a clean working surface (cover the remaining sheets with a cloth) and brush all over with olive oil. Place another sheet on top of the first and brush with oil. Add a third sheet but don't brush with oil.
- Using a sharp knife or a pair of kitchen scissors, cut the pastry sheets in half vertically along the long side, and then into thirds horizontally. You should have six equal rectangles. Place about two tablespoons of the filling on each pastry stack and roll it into a cylinder. Run a wet finger along the seam and press gently to seal. Crimp and push in the ends to make a cracker shape. Trim the ends with scissors if necessary.
- Repeat the process with the remaining fillo sheets. Place the crackers on a non-stick baking sheet and brush them all over with olive oil. Bake the firecrackers for 10-15 minutes or until the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve with sour cream, ketchup, mango chutney, or any chutney you like.
