This easy and fun treat made with chocolate, nuts, biscotti, and dried figs resembles salami and when sliced, it yields delectable cookies. No-bake eggless chocolate salami recipe is Europe's favorite Christmas treat and a snack year-round.
Best of all, it makes the perfect edible gift!
Rumor has it that this dessert originated in Portugal and Italy but quickly became popular across Europe. Most recipes use egg yolks but I try not to mess with them if I don't have to.
I'm never sure if they're cooked enough. To think that my favorite childhood treat was raw egg yolk whipped with sugar. Eek!
What's to love about this chocolate salami?
This chocolate salami was the only dessert my mom could make without messing it up. If she could do it, so can you. For the record, my mom is an excellent cook but when it comes to baking, she's got two left hands. ๐
If you're too are not a baker, you'll love this recipe and my edible Christmas candles. It doesn't get easier than that.
Who doesn't love an easy and quick holiday treat? The best part, this chocolate salami is undeniably delicious!
Although we change cookies every year, my childhood friend and I always include this salami in our Christmas cookie baking tradition. It's a must-have! Serve them along with these mushroom-shaped cookies and get everyone confused, ha. They'd be a good treat for April Fool's day! ๐
How to Make No-Bake Eggless Chocolate Salami?
- Melt the chocolate and butter over low heat or a double boiler until smooth and all chocolate has melted. If the mixture is too thick, add cream or milk. Remove from the heat.
- Add the remaining ingredients except for sugar. Mix well. Let it cool.
- Spread half the mixture onto plastic wrap or parchment paper and shape it into a log. Roll up the paper and twist the ends to seal. Roll it back and forth on a work surface a few times to make the log evenly round. Repeat with the remaining chocolate mixture. Place the logs in the refrigerator until firm, about 1 hour.
- Roll each log in the powdered sugar to coat. Brush off excess sugar. Wrap it up in kitchen twine to give it an authentic salami look (optional).
- To serve, let the logs sit at room temperature for 10 minutes. Using a serrated knife, cut the logs into ยฝ-inch thick slices. Keep refrigerated.

No-Bake Eggless Chocolate Salami
EQUIPMENT
- Kitchen twine
Ingredients
- 10 oz dark chocolate chips, like Ghirardelli
- 6 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1-2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk, if necessary
- 1 cup mixed nuts, chopped (pecans, walnuts, pistachios, hazelnuts, or slivered almonds)
- 10 dried figs, stem removed and chopped
- 2 plain biscotti, crushed
- 1 teaspoon orange zest or orange extract
- 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
- 2 tablespoons spiced rum, Kahlua or Amaretto (optional)
- powdered sugar for coating
Instructions
- Melt the chocolate and butter over a low heat or a double boiler until smooth and all chocolate has melted.
Roll back and forth on a work surface a few times to make the log evenly round.
Notes
- You can use Nilla wafers or digestive biscuits (about 1 cup) instead of biscotti and any nuts you have on hand.
- Don't get tempted to form this into one large and thick salami. It will break and crumble when you try to cut it.

This reminds me of what my Mom called an icebox log that she makes chocolate with white mini marshmellows mixed in or peanut butter flavour with coloured marshmellows (that one she calls confetti icebox log). The nuts would certain make it 'healthier' than my Mom's version. She never sugared the outside though - my Mom is not too big on presentation (she would call it 'FANCY', like it's a bad word.) I love my Mom. ๐
Jas says
When I was little and hated food the only way mom could get me to eat anything was by making it look pretty. Poor mom went to great lengths (no problem eating now, though. LOL) So, I guess that's why still love a good presentation, and it's especially important for photos. The ingredient combination is endless. I like the idea of peanut butter and colored marshmallows would make it so festive. ๐
